Components by Bobby Hutcherson is an excellent album for the listeners who are just getting into jazz, and for the advanced listeners as well. It has a little of everything; abstract sounds in Movement and Air, traditional directions in Little B’s Poem, and it has some real heavy hitters in the jazz game, the usual suspects Freddy Hubbard, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Chambers, and James Spaulding. Since Bobby Hutcherson is lead on Components, there are many occasions throughout the album where the beautiful sounds of the vibes really shine, as he demonstrates the beauty if the distinct sound of a vibraphone and how it can be incorporated in Jazz. It should be noted that Hutcherson does experiment a little more with mallet percussion, using the xylophone during a small portion of Movement.
Whether you are a novice or an expert in the sounds of jazz, Components gives you a whirlwind tour of some the many directions that jazz can take you.
