Eric Dolphy – Out to Lunch (1964)

Featuring some of the finest Jazz musicians to ever play, Out to Lunch features the greatness of Tony Williams (Drums), Bobby Hutcherson (Vibraphone), Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet), and Richard Davis (Bass), and while individually these sidemen have great albums in various Jazz subcategories, they all collectively branch outside of their conventional boxes to create this free formed masterpiece. The song Hat & Beard is a tribute to Thelonious Monk, so even his inspiration comes through on this work. This is Dolphy’s only Blue Note recording, and sadly, it was also his last recording. Eric Dolphy passed away months after making this album.
The cover art and title match this album brilliantly, as Out to Lunch is the definition of Jazz in many different ways. Listen, and enjoy.
