An album that can fit into many different jazz sub genres, Freddie Hubbard‘s Sky Dive has a whirlwind of sounds, with each song having it’s own distinct characteristics. It’s inspiration has been felt for many generations, and there have been a couple Hip Hop producers that have used this particular album as a muse, with beautiful instrumentation by some of the biggest names in jazz, many of whom are still active musicians. The arrangements of Grammy award winner Don Sebesky has the gift of giving jazz a cinematic sound, and as someone who has worked with many contemporary musicians, was very heavy in producing jazz recordings for the CTI label. You can find many of these combinations interchange on different albums, for example George Benson, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, CTI Records founder Creed Taylor, Billy Cobham, Ray Barretto are all legendary musicians that on numerous occasions recorded with one another on the CTI label.

Sky Dive is a album that teeters on the edges of funk, while the abstractness is never too grand. It has a timeless quality, with excellent instrumental arrangements and compositions.
