Here is an installment from Mr. Afro-Filipino, the King of Latin Funk, Mr. Joe Bataan as he pays tribute to the late great Gil Scott-Heron as he does his version of the classic song entitled The Bottle. There was a fantastic soulful funky instrumental version that was recorded in 1975, and there was a version that Mr. Bataan recorded in 2009 that included the heavy lyrics, written by Gil Scott-Heron himself. Joe Bataan is a legend, and he still performs to this day. This New York resident and native spent time with both Gil Scott and Roy Ayers, and his multi-cultural background shines through most of his music, especially this particular cover. It is difficult to say which is better because they are both so far apart in terms of conventional musical genres, yet they share obvious similarities. Enjoy this version Joe Bataan paying great homage.
