John Coltrane – Impressions (Video) (1961)

An excellent video, with an legendary cast. John Coltrane – soprano sax/tenor sax
Eric Dolphy – flute/alto sax, McCoy Tyner – piano, Reggie Workman – bass, and Elvin Jones – drums. This is an extraordinary video, because with the grainy, fuzzy quality of the historic quality, and the retro-60’s talk show camera angles, watching this video seems like a surreal dream, as if watching it is still not enough proof that this ever took place.

The influence of Coltrane can be seen just by watching this video, as each of his sidemen in this particular performance are revered as jazz greats, with McCoy Tyner and Reggie Workman still performing in 2011. The “Coltrane Tree” has spread far and wide, and it seems that anyone who has had the honor of meeting him has been forever blessed by his presence, as he will forever be enshrined as jazz greatness.
