When Roy Ayers fans think of other musicians that Roy collaborated with, Rick James will probably not be the first name that comes to mind, and other fans may not even know that they shared credits on certain tracks. Here is an album that exemplifies their musical talents colliding, where Roy Ayers is featured on two songs from from Rick James’ 1982 album Throwin’ Down. One track entitled Dance With Me, and the other is called My Love.

To this day, Roy Ayers refers to Rick James as a creative genius, and he also calls him a friend. When listening to Dance With Me, it is great to hear Rick James shout out Roy Ayers at the 4:19 mark, and when his solo is in full swing, it’s great to hear the chants of “Go Roy!”. As a contrary to the upbeat disco funk sound, Roy’s vibes on the slow and melodic My Love is reminiscent of Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity years.

Here are the two songs, Rick James with Roy Ayers as the feature.
